By combining social sharing with product reviews, Melanyn Beauty allows users to discover top-rated products specifically suited for natural hair through a simple search or barcode scan. The platform focuses on providing a supportive community where users can access reviews from friends, influencers, and other like-minded members.

For the Melanyn Beauty project, the goals were to:

‍

- Develop a user-centric web and mobile platform that makes searching for natural hair products simple and intuitive.

- Incorporate a barcode scanning feature, enabling users to quickly retrieve reviews on any product by scanning it on the go.

- Create a community-driven review system where users can see product feedback from their friends, influencers, and community members.

- Design a modern, responsive UI that appeals specifically to Black women, with a focus on inclusivity, beauty, and empowerment.

- Optimise for both mobile and desktop experiences, ensuring smooth performance across devices.

Key Features

1. Product Search & Barcode Scan:  

   The core functionality of Melanyn Beauty is its dual search capabilities. Users can either search for products by name through the web and mobile app or scan a product’s barcode to immediately pull up reviews, ratings, and detailed information.

2. Community-Driven Reviews:  

   The platform’s social integration allows users to connect with their friends, follow influencers, and receive trusted product reviews from their network. This social element is key to fostering a supportive and inclusive community for Black women.

3. Mobile-First Approach:  

   Since many users will likely access the platform while shopping, a mobile-first design was critical. The app features fast loading times, intuitive navigation, and a seamless user experience on smartphones, while the desktop version is equally sleek and user-friendly.

4. Tailored Product Recommendations:  

   Leveraging user preferences and search history, the platform offers personalised recommendations for natural hair care products, ensuring that users discover products most suited to their needs.

5. Influencer Integration:  

   The platform offers opportunities for influencers in the natural hair and beauty space to engage with the community. Influencer reviews are featured prominently, and users can follow their favourite influencers for trusted product suggestions.

6. Visual & Inclusive Design:  

   The design for Melanyn Beauty emphasises inclusivity, with imagery and colours that resonate with the target audience. The focus is on bold, beautiful visuals, reflecting the brand's mission to empower Black women in their beauty journey.

   Users can filter search results based on product type (e.g., shampoos, conditioners), ingredients (e.g., sulphate-free, vegan), and user-generated ratings, making it easier to find the best products for specific hair types and concerns.

8. Secure, Scalable Infrastructure:  

   The platform is built with scalability in mind, using a robust backend to handle potentially high traffic and extensive user-generated content. Additionally, security protocols were prioritised to protect user data and ensure a safe browsing experience.

   With the integration of a barcode scanning tool and tailored product search, Melanyn Beauty puts the power of beauty discovery directly into users' hands, making it easier than ever to find and evaluate natural hair care products.

   By focusing on community-driven content, the platform saw a rise in user engagement. Users were not only more likely to trust reviews from friends and influencers but also encouraged to participate by contributing their own reviews.

- Platform: Website build in Webflow with the web app built with react for front-end development, with a Node.js backend for handling user data and search queries. The mobile app uses React Native for cross-platform functionality.

- Database: MongoDB for scalable storage of user reviews, product information, and user-generated content.

- Barcode Scanning: Integration of third-party barcode scanning technology, ensuring quick and accurate product lookups via mobile devices.

- Analytics: Google Analytics and custom event tracking for user engagement metrics.

- Security: HTTPS encryption, secure login, and user data protection protocols to safeguard personal information.

- Hosting: Deployed on a cloud-based infrastructure (AWS) to ensure scalability and reliability.
